CHAPTER THREE

10:02 pm, Saturday Night

Clara frowned as the insistent, blaring sound of a rock and roll record spewed from the radio behind her. She was sorry that she had come—such crude people, not at all her sort.

Of course it was Agatha’s doing. She was always taking up with the strangest ones—and she did owe Agatha a favor, something to make up for not inviting her to the party. How in the hell had she found out about it, anyway? Jackie, probably—that girl couldn’t keep anything secret. It was most unlikely that Agatha really believed she had been invited, despite Clara’s insistence. No, she knew very well that she had not been, and no doubt she would find some opportunity to gain her vengeance.

In the meantime, Clara thought dismally, here I am in this awful house, with just the sort of people I cannot bear, and Agatha certainly is not going to want to leave, not for hours yet.

Agatha indeed was at that moment pouring herself another drink from the bottles scattered on the makeshift bar. She stirred the drink with her finger and glided across the room to where Clara sat on the sofa in the corner.

“What the hell are you doing in this dark corner alone, girl?” Agatha demanded. “Or do you have somebody hidden under the cushions?”

“Oh, I’m having a breather,” Clara apologized, making room for her sister on the seat beside her. “I’m getting to be an old woman, pet. I can’t carry on the way you do.”

“Carry on!” Agatha shrieked with delight, clearly pleased to think that she could out-go her companion. “Well, what do you think God made queens for, pray tell me? Did you get a load of the piece of chicken Larry brought around? Do you think it’s his trick, or just an ornament he carried over for all to see?”

“If it is his trick, somebody will get an evil throat cut before the night is over,” Clara said. “Or haven’t you noticed? Miss sweet young thing is doing everything but sixty-nine with that other one, the German.”

Agatha followed the meaningful glance and giggled happily. “Mercy, what a pair! Wouldn’t you just love to be in the middle? Madge, I would be out of my mind.”

“You are out of your fruit mind, love, you and your group therapy. Besides, they don’t look like they need you.”

Agatha frowned at that, and took another swallow of her drink. “It could be arranged, never you worry about that. I’ll bet it wouldn’t take much to get a daisy chain going.” She smacked her lips, smiling again. “As a matter of fact, that’s not a bad idea. You know how Kurt loves his dirty pictures.”

“For crap’s sake, you wouldn’t let him take pictures of you? He’ll have them tacked up in every tearoom in town.”

Agatha’s expression left little doubt that she would most certainly allow her picture to be taken. “Well, count me out,” Clara concluded lamely.

“Oh, woman, I’ll bet you douche with vinegar, sour as you are,” Agatha stormed, jumping up from the sofa to march off across the room.
